This new-construction lake house on Lake Winnipesaukee brings Scandinavian-inspired simplicity to a heavily wooded, steeply sloped waterfront site. The house bridges the gap between rugged, unassuming Northern European cottages—historically defined by living green roofs and organic log siding—and modern New England lakefront design to create a minimalist, contemporary retreat deeply rooted in its environment.
The primary design challenge lay in the site’s dramatic topography, which falls sharply from the access road down toward the water. Rather than disrupting the terrain, the design team embraced a natural flat plateau near the lakefront. The home’s footprint was woven into a tight envelope bounded by several mature tree stands, a steep rear ledge outcropping, and a massive natural boulder. Preserved throughout construction, this boulder now serves as a landmark welcoming arrivals down the driveway.
By aligning the architecture with the site’s natural contours, the layout achieves at-grade exterior access from nearly every room on the first floor. This seamless continuity dissolves the threshold between indoor and outdoor living, embedding the occupants directly into the landscape. The expansive floor plan is strategically oriented around these strict site constraints, optimizing unique, multi-directional views across the water and into the surrounding forest.
