Case Studies
West End Residence
Built in 1860 and set in Portland’s historic West End neighborhood, this Victorian home underwent a complete overhaul of the interiors while carefully preserving the exterior’s period-specific massing and intricate detailing. The original home had undergone countless renovations over the past century and a half, resulting in awkward disconnected spaces that required thoughtful architectural intervention to improve flow, quality of light, and safety while modernizing amenities and finishes. The design team used a transitional style that playfully balances traditional and contemporary elements.
House on a Ridge
This home is composed of three simple shifted gable structures that break up the building’s mass while responding to the site’s challenging topography. The elemental forms are accentuated by restrained openings and minimal roof overhangs. Interior and exterior finishes were selected to age naturally with use and the surrounding environment. House on a Ridge received the 2019 AIA Maine Merit Award for Excellence in Architecture and was featured in Dwell Magazine’s Nov/Dec 2019 issue.
Batson River Brewing and Distilling
Designed within a former Portland Public Works maintenance garage, this 9,500-square-foot industrial space was transformed into an elevated dining, distilling, and tasting destination in Portland’s Bayside neighborhood. The design leveraged the building’s original brick, timber, and steel construction, layering refined millwork, stone, and muted finishes to create a rich hospitality environment with multiple dining experiences and flexible private event functionality.
Wescustogo Hall and North Yarmouth Community Center
This 20,000-square-foot net-positive community center was designed for the Town of North Yarmouth, Maine, replacing a beloved grange hall lost to fire in 2013. The project provides flexible civic, social, creative, and athletic space for a growing community. It was honored by the Maine chapter of the AIA with a 2020 Merit Award for Excellence in Architecture in the Commercial/Institutional category.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in your architectural design services?
Our architectural design services cover everything from initial concept development to detailed construction plans. We handle space planning, layout design, 3D renderings, material selection, and permit drawings. Our team ensures a seamless and well-thought-out design process to make each renovation or new build as smooth as possible.
How long does the design process take?
The timeline depends on the scope of the project. Barrett Made’s structured approach is intended to keep things timely and efficient, with a detailed project schedule provided during the initial consultation. In general, design phases typically range from 3 to 12 months.
Can you help me visualize the design before construction starts?
Yes. Barrett Made creates detailed architectural drawings and 3D renderings so clients can develop a realistic understanding of how their space will look before work begins. These visualizations help refine details and support confident design decisions.
Will there be unexpected costs during the renovation?
Unexpected costs can arise due to structural surprises such as water damage, mold, or weak framing; changes to original design plans; code compliance upgrades in older homes; permit and inspection delays; and fluctuations in material pricing. Barrett Made works to avoid surprises wherever possible and maintains open, transparent communication when changes occur.
Can I make changes once the project has started?
Yes. Changes can be made during the project, but they may affect both schedule and budget. Barrett Made guides clients through the decision-making process and provides clear updates on how adjustments may affect project scope.
