Photography Field Trip

At Barrett Made, we are very fortunate to get to work on great projects with amazing people. Small or large, residential or commercial, we get lots of joy from collaborating to create unique spaces for unique people.  Often times we get so caught up in the process and a successful finished product, we forget to stop and appreciate what we have helped create.  This past week, we revisited some of Barrett Made’s completed projects from last year with local photographer Erin Little to see the spaces being used for their intended purposes.

Tin Pan Bakery. Yum.

Tin Pan Bakery. Yum.

Our first stop of the day was a place where everyone should go first thing in the morning, Tin Pan Bakery.  Tin Pan is located in a small unassuming retail strip on Brighton Avenue, across from Capisic Street.  We completed this project in November 2016.  The owner, Elise, had approached us to help her turn her passion for baking into a brick and mortar retail bakery here in Portland.  We must say, the space turned out great... almost as great as their baked goods.

Next stop was The Portland Flea-for-All.  This project was quite the undertaking.  Portlanders had known the space as Paul’s Food Center, which had been its occupant since 1975.  Flea-for-All owners Erin Kiley and Nathaniel Baldwin purchased the building in March 2016 to relocate their already thriving business. Turning a 19th century building, that spent the last 40 years as a grocery store in to a funky, functional, wide-open retail space that captures the spirit of the owners and the vintage goods that they sell was challenging, but the we think the end result is pretty spectacular.  Of course, having Erin and Nathaniel doing the decorating doesn’t hurt.

Portland Flea For All. I need that.....

Our final stop was a residential project that wrapped up in October 2016.  The original house was built by John Howard Stevens, son of John Calvin, in 1904 and the addition was built in 1914.  We were tasked with reinventing the upstairs part of the addition and turning it into a master suite with a bedroom, bathroom and office.  This house is the definition of the term “good bones” so demolition was a real pleasure.  With guidance from the home owner, we decided to leave some of the “bones” exposed and it turned out stunning.  Unfortunately, it also gave us bedroom envy.

These three spaces were amazing to revisit and photograph.  You can feel the distinct personality in each of them, filled with all the things that now seem to have belonged there all along.  Oh, and Erin was awesome!  Equally at home in bakeries, flea markets and beautiful homes, we highly recommend her.  She even let us take pictures of her. A real professional.

Designing and Building

When we hired Matthew Ahlberg as our full time, in house architect we were optimistic that there was a large need for a one-stop-shop for design and build projects. We've been overwhelmed with the interest and we are incredibly excited about the projects coming our way. Among them, the Strout Residence. A modern take on a farmhouse, this 2200sq ft home sits on an elevated parcel on Shore Road in Cape Elizabeth. The Strouts are longtime Cape Elizabeth residents with strong roots in the area. After they lived in Vermont for careers, they knew they wanted to come home to Cape so their two young sons could experience similar childhoods as their own, filled with family and the closeness of a small town. And you can't get much closer than building your forever home right next to the kid's grandparents. Built-in babysitters weren't part of our package.

The modern home has 3 large bedrooms with a spacious room above the garage that will be finished as a master suite as this young family grows. The home features a first floor open floor plan with a large kitchen and living area great for entertaining or just feeding your toddlers roughly 13 meals a day. Matthew wanted to take full advantage of the scenic wooded lot which has seasonal peaks of the ocean so he designed several outdoor porches and decks where the family can comfortably be outside and enjoy their surroundings.

Its always an exciting process to collaborate with clients and its always enjoyable when the clients have a strong vision, passion and aesthetic, as the Strouts certainly do. Their excitement about the process is contagious and really, what's more exciting than seeing your dream home come to life?

WELCOME, MATTHEW

With continued growth and opportunity we have noticed a real demand in greater Portland for a small building company that offers in house design services. A true Design/ Build firm. A company that can cut down on time, costs and waste to bring clients visual renderings of their ideas. In July 2016 we brought on Matthew Ahlberg as a full-time member of the Barrett Made team to make this a reality.
