The Gray Street Residence project consisted of three existing apartment units in a three story historical building on Portland’s West End. The lower two floors were renovated to provide a cosmetic refresh and life safety improvements for the tenant occupants.
The top floor, a portion of a former boarding house that had not been occupied in over a half century, was re-purposed as an owner’s unit for a couple, their two dogs and several cats. Overall the roof volume was opened up to provide additional daylighting via several thoughtfully placed skylights while providing a greater sense of space for the efficient living area. Though compact, the space provides ample room for cooking, dining, and living in the main space and also has a primary suite and guest bedroom and full bathroom. Structural improvements were also made throughout construction to bring the building up to modern code and energy efficiency standards.
