These experiences had a strong influence in becoming interested in pursuing architecture. After relocating to New York City to attend the New York Institute of Technology, he received his Bachelor in Architecture and worked for multiple architecture firms for about 12 years. During his time in NYC, the experience proved invaluable for his career, but in 2015, Mike and his wife spontaneously decided to move to Portland on a whim on a search to be closer to nature and to get away from the big city life. Never looking back, they now reside in South Portland, fixing up their 1900 quasi-Victorian home and chasing their mini-schnauzer, Arnie, around Willard Beach.

Ty is originally from Macungie, Pennsylvania where he grew up and attended college locally at Lehigh University. Following a brief stint in finance upon graduation, he was drawn back into the trades because of his desire to work with his hands in a physically challenging environment. Ty spent much of his youth on and around job sites working for his father’s general construction company, and also has two brothers in the industry in various capacities, so the transition was a natural one. After working full time for his dad for two years gaining experience in all areas of construction, Ty decided to move to Portland for geographic reasons as it is situated along the coast allowing for after work surf sessions, and its proximity to the mountains where he spends many a weekend exploring the trails on a snowboard or mountain bike with his dog Nala. In Barrett Made as a company, he recognized an opportunity to expand his carpentry knowledge and learn from a group of highly skilled craftsmen while building unique custom projects.
